Prayer Song

Back in high school, Jason Schraub and I wrote a song together, which I can only describe as gospel music meets teen angst  - an anthem for the religiously disinclined - and it's been stuck in our heads all these years since. I'm pleased to say we finally got around to producing it - thanks in no small part to Brittney Richardson and Evan Cary filling out the choir. It's a little rock, a little soul, a little what-is-life-I-don't-know … enjoy our 18-year-old selves almost as many years later.

Lyrics:

Title: “Prayer Song”

Let me start by telling you that I am not a holy man

Never thought I’d believe and I don’t know if I even can

I’ve heard of prophets, saints, the Lord our god and angels too

But I prefer to spread the word of my muddled, troubled point of view

I’ve tossed and turned, my souls adjourned

My mind has learned that books are burned sometimes

I've been tried, and hypnotized

I’ve proselytized my cult of lies

In 18 years, my lake fears has grown three thousand miles wide

The product of a news brigade that’s kicking into overdrive

The church right down the street’s got painted glass and it’s a lovely view

Why not go out today and see if all that view is true

I’ve tossed and turned, my souls adjourned

My mind has learned that books are burned sometimes

I have tried, I’ve been denied

I have told so many lies

(Ooo, why you gotta lie boy?)

Yes I have prayed to have it made

To see me paid, to get me laid

(Ooo, you gotta try boy)

Testify!

Yes I have prayed to have it made, to see me paid, to get me laid

Come on give me some, woo!

Does it matter in the end that I am not a holy man?

Never thought I’d believe, I don’t know if I even can

I hope one day you’ll understand
